Grant Elliott's last WCC match is on Saturday 2nd August at home

Following his call-up by New Zealand, where the Black Caps won the series convincingly, some might think his return to WCC would be somewhat of an anti-climax. Well, not a bit of it!

In the typical down-to-earth fashion we've all grown to admire, he got immediately involved in WCC training and assisting with the colts.

New Zealand have called on him again so he will be leaving us on 6th August.

We're planning a rather special party for Grant after the home match against Esher on 2nd August, where we'll do our very best to let him know how greatly we appreciate him and how very much we're going to miss him.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, to say good bye.

It goes without saying that he will always be welcome at WCC, and that were his professional career to permit him, play for us again next season.

A look back at the first two ODIs:

Grant has now played for the visiting New Zealanders' ODI Team since 18th June, 2008.

18th June, 2008:

His first game at Edgebaston he took three valuable English wickets; Wright, Collingwood and Shah.

21st June, 2008:

At Bristol, he batted to his maiden International half century finally reaching 56, the highest score on his team. Most importantlty he stabilised the innings and helped build their eventual total of 182.

At the time, perhaps we all thought that wasn't enough. England were sure-fire favourites to win the match.

But then the New Zealanders took the field, and Grant took 2 wickets for 9 runs. Skipper Daniel Vettori called on Grant to bowl the final over, where he forced an error from Chris Tremlett who was caught by Vettori, no less. New Zealand win!

Isn't this the stuff that dreams are made of?

In our certainly biased view, he should have received the "Man of the match" award!

Seriously folks, we must all be proud of Grant's performance which sets a magnificent example to all our WCC's players, both Adult and Colt.

We salute your efforts, Grant and wish you well for the final two ODIs at The Oval and Lords, this coming week.

During both the Edgebaston and Bristol ODI coverage on Sky TV, Weybridge Cricket Club was mentioned many times - David Lloyd was heard to say, "He probable lives in one of those big houses in Weybridge!"

As Peter Hayter wrote in The Mail on Sunday;

"When Elliott had Ian Bell caught in the covers at 62-3, precipitating England's collapse to 64-6, New Zealand could have been forgiven for asking: With club cricketers like him, who needs highly paid international stars?"
